Big Black Disk launched it’s vinyl-specific website, covering news about the resurgence of vinyl records in popular culture, as well as publishing reviews of new music being published to vinyl records. Calling itself a “Blog’zine,” Big Black Disk aims to combine elements of popular media together to create an interesting and informative site.
Although audiophiles and record collectors have often been sited as the foundation for vinyl’s new found life, the site is focused primarily on speaking to the younger vinyl set: college students and teens. “It would be a mistake to think that the older generation is the driving force behind vinyl’s return,” say Chris Sommovigo, BBD’s founder.
“Teens and college-age adults have always been the most significant factor in a music format’s viability, and there’s no mistaking that they are the driving force behind the resurgence.” Sommovigo points to the variety of new records being released as evidence of the young demand: “There is more new vinyl coming our from new bands and artists, indie labels and majors alike, than there has been in the past 10 years or more. And while I’m sure the reissue market is thriving, I’m thrilled to note that there are new releases from bands as small as Liquid Limbs to rock-establishment types like R.E.M. and Beck.”
Sommovigo has made the case for vinyl records being the best value in music commerce, and his logic is difficult to argue with: “Let’s just look at what you get in exchange for your investment – if you buy a vinyl record nowadays, you’re usually given a companion CD with the entire album in digital form – or a coupon for a one-time download of the whole album as an MP3 compatible with your iPod. It’s a ‘eat your cake and have it, too’ proposition. But if you spend your real money on virtual property, you have nothing but a file which loosely translates to an extended rental. You can’t sell that file like you might be able to sell your record.”
Aside from the difference in sound, often noted as being ”warmer” or “more organic sounding,” the record-as-collectible is one of the draws bringing CD-age listeners to the vinyl format. Noted are the easier to read liner notes and lyrics and the large format of the artwork, as well as the high quality sleeves – often “gatefold” - making the entire object desirable for collectible reasons. It’s hard to argue the collectability point with vinyl afficionados, one look at eBay reveals records being sold for over $1,000.00 with fair regularity.
Big Black Disk can be navigated to via the web at: www.BigBlackDisk.com where visitors will find blog entries, a merchandise mart with promotional gear. A record store directory is coming soon.
